During my nursing training I was fortunate enough to spend two valuable learning placements in the palliative care environment. I also came across patients within a community setting who had palliative care needs. These periods and experiences helped in developing an insight to the management of and symptom control for patients with palliative care needs. This time also gave me an opportunity to develop the required skills for working with this type of patient.
I would encourage them to think in depth as to why they want to work in a palliative care setting as it can be emotionally draining and demands commitment and dedication in order to keep up to date with clinical procedures and developments. You must be prepared to work beyond your shift parameters at times in order to deliver the best standard of care for your patients. You must be willing to undertake additional education courses to maximise your knowledge and skills development.
