I am a Paediatric Health Care Assistant, Band 3, currently working in the Emergency Department (ED) in the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children (RBHSC). I have been working in the RBHSC for 12 years. I moved to the ED 6 years ago when the ward I had been working in closed down.
Working in the ED is very challenging and I really enjoy the variety every day brings.
I completed the Band 3 Paediatric Vital Signs Training in November 2011 and NVQ Level 3 in March 2012 which supports me to be more patient focused. These courses gave me confidence in recognising a sick child and reporting my concerns to the nurse in charge along with ensuring ensuring safe, effective person centred care at all times.
My favourite part of the job is working as part of a team to give children and their families the best possible care. I would advise anyone who is considering working in the ED that it is a very busy setting which can be very rewarding with great learning opportunities.
