What attracted you to become a Nursing Assistant?

I have always being interested in looking after people so I choose a career as a nursing assistant. I left school aged 15 years with minimal qualifications and commenced work in the hospital setting.

I worked there for 17 years and then in the community for the past 14 years. To date I have worked as a nursing assistant for 31 years and I know this has been the correct career for me.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy the day to day contact with my patients and I get great pleasure from knowing I’ve made a positive difference to their day. I often visit a home where the client is feeling down, anxious, lonely or sad. I really enjoy listening to their worries and helping them to feel less burdened or isolated and I may even get a smile on their face.

My community role has been enjoyable and I was able to have a good home/work balance and see my children grow up.

In my 31 years I have hardly missed a day as I’ve been blessed with good health.

Tell us about your most memorable moment in your role.

My most personal achievement has been passing my NVQ Level 3 Qualification in Health and Social Care. Having left school at the age of 15, engaging in study was really challenging for me so I was delighted to achieve this qualification.

My most memorable team achievement was being involved in caring for a patient who required ventilation in their own home for 3 years. This was very complex nursing care and I embraced the new clinical skills I gained. This allowed me to be an integral part of the team delivering high quality care. This job was very satisfying knowing the patient was getting the dignity and care that he deserved.

How do you see your career developing as a Nursing Assistant?

My career as a nursing assistant has developed over 31 years and I am very content in my current role as a community nursing assistant. During these years I’ve availed of opportunities to continue learning and have been very lucky to work with great teams, excellent colleagues and supportive managers.

I have never had any desire to do anything else or to become a nurse as I am very happy in my position and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career as a Nursing Assistant?

If someone was considering a career as a nursing assistant I would recommend it for them if they have qualities of being reliable, positive, keen to learn, honest, a good time keeper and enthusiastic.

This is a great career if you enjoy listening to people, have the ability to work in a team, being willing to do delegated duties and being able to accept the professional accepting responsibility for your actions. In this role it’s very important to be honest and keep promises and make sure to follow things through.

I would encourage someone considering this career to approach it aiming to always deliver a good quality service to the best of their ability.
