Role Summary

Emergency Nurse practitioner (ENP) Altnagelvin Hospital

Career Milestones

I qualified as an Adult Staff Nurse in 1995 following a four year degree programme at the University of Ulster. During my years at University I obtained a comprehensive and varied education both during my placements in the many hospitals in Northern Ireland and through my academic studies. I also completed an elective placement in the small state of Malawi, Africa.  This experience was a building block in my formative years whilst studying nursing and it gave me an understanding of what it means to be a nurse.

My path to Emergency Care Nursing was not intentional as I had intended to apply for midwifery. However during my initial experience in the Emergency Department I developed a great interest and desire to work in Emergency Care and have continued to do so. It is a place where you work across all fields of nursing practice and specialties. I have developed particular interest in the care of individuals with mental health problems and I attended various courses and workshops to support my practice in that area of care.

Enjoyable aspects of the job/role
